Mar. 15 Guest Speaker - Connie Goss "The Dirt on Soil".  Connie Goss, from MoBot's Master Gardener's Speakers Bureau, will give an informative presentation about soil and the techniques we can use to grow soil for beautiful hostas. From testing soil using the Jar Test to encouraging beneficial fungi growth in your garden, Connie's topic will be illustrated with slides that acquaint you with soil and lead you through the process of building and maintaining it to improve plant growth.

June 9 National Open Hosta Garden Day. The goal of this exciting new event is to get more friends and neighbors interested in hostas! Gardens need not be manicured. Click here for a list of open gardens. Visit as many gardens as you like, in any order, between the hours of 10am and 4 pm. Make a day of it and bring your friends!

Sept 15 Guest Speaker - Rob Mortko, will present "Hot Hostas for the Cool Shade". Rob and his wife, Sheri, are the owners of Made in the Shade Gardens in Olathe, KS. Don't miss this event!
Oct. 20 Guest Speaker - Ted Piekutowski will give a presentation on the basics of bonsai, along with some history about bonsai. He will give a demonstration that shows that both bonsai and hosta can be displayed together. Ted is a member and past president of the Bonsai Society of Greater St. Louis. He has many creative interests including gardening, creating extravagant Halloween displays, Circus Model Building, and photography. Looking forward to Ted's visit!
November No Meeting
Dec. 8 Holiday Celebration - Make your reservations now! Submit the reservation form and payment to Cindy at the September 15 meeting or no later than November 23. Price is $12 per person for a wonderful catered lunch. Cash bar (beer and wine).

Guest Speaker - Don DeFoe presents "Using Hosta Leaves in Floral Arrangements". Florist Don Defoe will show us how to create exquisite flower designs using hosta leaves in arrangements. Don has won national awards for his flower designs and has put together arrangements for a US President and also for the 1996 Olympic Games. Join us for this informative seminar.

Guest Speaker - Larry Tucker presents "Confessions of a Hostaholic". Larry was the Mid-South’s founding president and newsletter editor for 10 years. His column was the centerpiece of the Hosta Hotline for 80 editions. Made in the Shade: Confessions of a Hostaholic has been published and is available for sale. The book is a collection of Larry’s popular newsletter columns and gardening tips from the past 10 years. Join us to hear Larry's fun and entertaining presentation.

Roundtable Discussions

We will have 5 or 6 members as leaders, one at each table of 7 people.  Leaders will lead the discussion about a topic for 15-20 minutes.  When the time is up the 7 people move to the next table. With 6 tables, the program will be about 1-1/2 hrs. 

Discussions may include topics such as: Mulching, fertilizing, dividing and planting, pest and disease control, soil preparation, Hostas that have done well in your garden, garden photography, companion plants, preparation of a leaf for a hosta show, garden design, hostas in containers, new hostas for 2011 and where to get them, or any hosta garden related topic.

We need volunteers! If you would like to be one of these 5-6 leaders, please let Phyllis Weidman know by no later than January 31st at pow1031@gmail.com.

Annual Hosta Auction - This year we have a large lot of cherished hostas and companion plants donated by members, Martha and Lamar Karlovetz. They have permanently moved to their home in Florida and donated their hosta collection to the St. Louis Hosta Society. Their very generous donation is much appreciated.

"Native Plants" presentation by Joan and Larry Hummel. Meeting will take place at Shaw Nature Reserve, Gray Summit, MO. We will meet at the Visitors Center. [Admission is free with Missouri Botanical Garden membership. Otherwise, the cost is $3 ($2 for seniors). The Society will pay all admission fees.] From the Visitors Center, we will drive the short distance to the Whitmire Garden. There are restroom facilities available, plus the nearby air-conditioned manor house is open in case anyone needs to get cooled off. There are many benches where you may rest and plenty of shade. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring insect repellant if you wish, and bring a cold drink (no hospitality available). Click here for directions.

Special Guest Speaker - Bob Solberg will present "How to Grow your Best Hostas". Bob is a nationally known lecturer on the subject of hostas and author of many articles on hostas. Bob and his wife, Nancy, are the owners of Green Hill Farm, a wholesale and retail nursery. He is a world-reknowned hybridizer and has introduced more than 50 hostas to date and plans to add approximately five to that number each year. ‘Guacamole’, introduced in 1994 and Hosta of the Year in 2002 is probably his best known cultivar and is probably in your garden. ‘Orange Marmalade’ PP#16,742 is his first patented hosta. Hostas ‘Corkscrew’™, ‘Ginsu Knife’™, ‘Baby Blue Eyes’™, ‘Cracker Crumbs’™, and ‘One Man’s Treasure’™ are some of his better known introductions. Van grew up as a farmer in Oklahoma where his love for gardening got its start from his father and grandfather. He received his certification as a Master Gardener in 2001. He has been an adult educator, entrepreneur, and businessman. He has volunteered for the Missouri Botanical Garden since 1998 and also volunteers at Flora Conservancy of Forest Park. He is a member of the St. Louis Master Gardener Advisory Committee and chairperson for the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau. He also is a Landscape Garden Advisor to the Shriners Hospital for Children since 2004.

If you cannot pick up your plants, please make arrangements to have someone pick them up for you. The plants are bare root and should be potted or planted as soon as possible.

July 27 Annual Hosta Auction - Pot up your plants early! The annual auction is one of two events that fund our society’s yearly activities and make the publication of our newsletter possible. Divide that large hosta clump and dig out part of those ever expanding perennials. Pot a piece, insert a label and bring it with you to the Society’s July 27th auction. Bring your checkbook. Bring your friends. Be the highest bidder. Take home a plant that you’ve been wanting. But most of all socialize, share your convention experiences and join your fellow society members for an afternoon of fun.

Meeting will be held at the Missouri Botanical Garden. We will meet in the Beaumont Room at 1:00 pm and we will also walk around the garden. Wear walking shoes and dress for the weather.

Special Guest Speaker - Mike Miller will join us to present a program on the historic Climatron and its construction, some seasonal information and a question and answer session.  The meeting will be held at the Creve Coeur Government Center at 1:00 pm.  This would be a great time to have all your gardening questions answered by Mike.  Please join us!

Dec. 7

Holiday Party - Join us at the Creve Coeur Government Center for a festive afternoon with friends and lunch catered by At your Fingertips Catering. Cost is $5.00 each for members and significant other. Price is $10.00 each for non-members. Cash bar. Reservations are required by Nov. 14.
